WORRY/ANXIETY: MARK OF FAITHLESSNESS

Text:                                              Matt. 6:25-34

INTRODUCTION: We are still dwelling on Christ’s greatest and most comprehensive single teaching popularly referred to as Christ’s Sermon On The Mount.  Study 18 which we had last addressed “If Thine Eye Be Single…”.  In it, we saw the meaning and the various implications of having a single eye.

Thereafter, Jesus begins to teach on Why We Must Not Be Worried and or Anxious over the mundane things of this life, showing how it smacks of faithlessness.  Continuing, He directs on What We Should Do Instead.  This is the focus of our study today.

Why We Must Not Worry (Matt. 6:25-34). Worry is a state of anxiety, to feel troubled about somebody or something.  Anxiety is a nervous feeling caused by fear that something bad will happen. Jesus teaches that if anyone is a true disciple of His, he should not be worried or anxious over things of this life that have no eternal consequence (cp. Mtt.6:25, 28, 31, 34; Phil. 4:6).  Buttressing this, He ensures us to consider the birds of the air and the grass of the field, how that God cares adequately for them (Matt. 6:25-30).  Looking closely at the verses of our texts, we will find the following reasons why we should not be worried or anxious:

g   The birds of the air and grass of the field are less than humans (Matt. 6:26).  He that so cares for the less cannot care less for the greater.

g   Worrying and being anxious cannot better the situation, instead it worsens (Matt. 6:27; Lk. 12:25-26).

g   God cares for all His creatures – all and sundry.  How will He being righteous close His heart and bowels towards His own children, who cry unto Him day and night (cp. Ps. 145:9, 13-20; Lk. 18:6-8).

g   As our father and the All-knowing god, He knows what things we need of even before we ask Him (Matt. 6:32).

g   Worrying/Anxiety is the way of the Gentiles what the heathen and they that know not God are after in this life are things that pertain to this temporal life.  And this is all their worry and care.  And it is for this they live.  But for children of God, children of light and heirs of the kingdom, it ought not to be so (Matt. 6:32).

g   Besides worries/anxiety are mark of faithlessness (Matt. 6:30).  If one knows God and believes in His rich attributes of love, mercy, tender kindness, righteousness, faithfulness, etc. – one will put one’s trust implicitly in Him and there shall be no room for worries and anxiety (Ps. 9:10).

What We Must Do Instead (Matt. 6:32-34). Rather than worrying and being anxiety, we should repose absolute confidence in God as a son/child due to his parents (Matt. 18:3).  We should also believe in and follow Him like the sheep follow the shepherd (cp. Ps. 100:2-3; 23:1-6).  With this assurance, faith and confidence, we should make our needs known to Him (Matt. 11:28; Phil. 4:6; Heb. 4:14-16).  It is certain that if we pray the above frame as well as patience, we will sure have answer.  And before the answer if physically manifested, our hearts will be at peace, patiently waiting (cp. Lk. 18:1-8).

So, why worry, when you can pray?  Why worry, when you have God?  Rise and let’s call upon Him.
