I want you to open your Bible As we read the book of Jeremiah We open to Jeremiah Chapter number 8 We will be reading from verse 18 to 22 When I would comfort myself against sorrow My heart is faint in me Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people Because of them that dwell in a far country Is not the Lord in Zion Is not her king in her Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images And with strange vanities The harvest is past The summer is ended And we are not saved For the heart of the daughter of my people And my heart I am black Astonishment has taken hold on me Is there no balm in Gilead Is there no physician there Why then Is not the health Of the daughter of my people recovered
Jeremiah’s Burden and Questions
That was Jeremiah the prophet At this point in time you can see him He was aware Of what was happening to his people He was aware Of the predicament of Israel At this point in time He had prophesied the captivity He had talked about the captivity that will last for 70 years He had warned the people earlier on To do the needful Peradventure The Lord will Knock out the things he has decided to do to them Because of their iniquities And at this point in time being a human being He was affected by the situation He was sorrowful His heart was spent in him Because of the plight of his people And because of the knowledge he had Knowing the past Knowing about the God of Israel Knowing the things their God has done in times past And what their God can still do And then considering the situation on ground He began to ask many questions And one of the questions was Is not the Lord in Zion Is God no longer in Zion The second question he asked was Is not her king in her The king of Zion, is he not there The next question he asked is Why have they provoked me to anger With their graven images and with strange vanities That is the reason why it looked like The Lord is not in Zion Because they have provoked him with their strange gods And with their strange vanities And then he looked around And said the harvest is past The summer is ended But we are not saved At this point in time we ought to be enjoying The salvation of the Lord We ought to be enjoying the blessings of the Lord How come these blessings are nowhere to be found And this man continued to weep And he said for the heart of the daughter of my people I am hot, I am not black Astonishment had taken hold on me I can’t understand what I am seeing I am pained by what is on ground And then he asked another question Is there no balm in Gilead And then he followed it up with another question Is there no physician there And then he added another question And why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered Why are we not healed

Explanation of the Balm in Gilead
In the land of Israel of old, balms used to grow in Gilead for the healing of the people when judiciously applied by a physician. The balsam tree is a little shrub that never grows high. The tree that produces this balm, the juice, the seed, and the stumps are all medicinal. It heals and comforts, both by tasting and by smelling. You taste it, the aroma that comes from it. You apply it, it brings soothing comfort and relieves the people of their problems.
Now, many physicians also lived there. Many physicians lived in Gilead, and it was these physicians that helped the people, administering these medications, administering this balm, so that the people would benefit from it. This means that they had resources in Gilead. They had the balm. At the same time, they had the physicians.
The physicians of those days, the doctors of those days, if you have the balm but you do not have the physicians, you cannot really benefit much because the physicians know how best to apply it. And if you have the physicians but you do not have the balm, the physicians cannot do much. But in this land, they had both the balm and the physicians.
So they had wonderful resources which the people were to take advantage of, but they did not, and so they remained in their problems. And that was the reason why Jeremiah asked these questions.

Do we not have physicians again in Gilead?
How come that the health of the daughter of my people has not recovered?
Do we not have balm again in Gilead?
Do we not have physicians again in the land?
Why the problem?
How come that the harvest has passed?
How come that the summer has ended and we are not saved?
We have been waiting for the summer.
We have been waiting for the harvest.
We expected by this time that everything would be okay, that our people would have recovered.
How come that we are still impoverished?
God’s Question to the Church Today
That was a big question from the mouth of the prophet Jeremiah. Now the Lord, by His Spirit, is asking the same question today.
That question is, do we not have abundant resources in the Watchman?
That question is, do we not have able ministers of the New Testament, ministers of the Spirit and not of the letter, because the letter kills while the Spirit gives life?
Do we not have such ministers?
And the next question is, why the suffering?
Why the problems?
Why the difficulties?
Why the complications that people are getting into?
Why the cry?
Why the weeping and the wailing?
Why am I seeing people with tears in their eyes?
Why am I seeing people behaving as if they do not have a God that can help them?
Why are they so impoverished?
Do we not have abundant resources in the Watchman again?
Do we not have able ministers of the New Testament again?
The Decline Observed Among God’s People
Why the dilapidation?
Why the wretchedness?
Why this backwardness?
Why am I seeing members of the church fainting?
Why am I seeing people tired, shattered, wretched, devastated?
Is there no God in the Watchman again?
The ministers in the Watchman, do they not have abilities again?
Their operations, cannot they yield excellent, result-oriented blessings of the Lord?
Why the suffering?
God’s Presence in the Church
I want to inform you, I want to tell you this thing again. Do you not know that God has placed His name, His Word, His Spirit, and His power in this place?
That is what we tell people.
That is what we announce.
That is the information we give to newcomers that visit our church.
That this is a place where the stones of life are turned into pillows.
This is the place where water comes out of the rocks.
But I want to ask: have your stones turned into pillows?
Have you gotten water out of the rocks?
Have you begun to suck honey out of the rocks?
Is that information a lie?
Loss of Testimonies and Spiritual Depth
Why the suffering?
Why is it that we do not hear testimonies of salvation again like of old?
Testimonies of men and women drastically saved.
People that came to church laden with iniquity, and then in the twinkling of an eye the load of sin is lifted up, and the people know that salvation has occurred and regeneration has taken place.
Why are we not hearing such testimonies again?
Why is it that multitudes of people that come to church, some possibly regenerated, have not been able to experience the second work of grace, the sanctification of their spirits?
Why is it that multitudes are still carrying the nasty nature of the natural man?
Questions About Spiritual Power
Is it that His Word is no longer efficacious?
Is it that His Spirit is no longer powerful?
Is it that His blood has lost its power?
Is it no longer potent?
Is it that His mercies have expired?
Why is it that many people who have been in church for many years have never experienced the baptism of the Spirit of God?
They came empty and they are still empty.
The Church Compared to the Pool of Bethesda
Why is it that in our churches today we find men and women with strange ailments, strange sicknesses, strange diseases?
How come our church is now becoming like the pool of Bethesda, where multitudes of impotent folk gather and remain there, and nobody is healed?
Only one person is healed, and the rest remain disappointed and discouraged.
Have our churches become the pool of Bethesda?
The Rise of Sickness and Poverty
Now multitudes in church are carrying drug medications in their pockets.
Hospitals have become our second home.
The little money people get is spent on medication.
Instead of getting better, they grow worse.
Is there no power in the Watchman again?
The Central Question Repeated
Is there no balm in Gilead?
Is there no physician there?
Why then is the health of the daughter of my people not recovered?
Declaration of Hope
Well, I want to tell us that there is still balm in Gilead.
We still have abundant resources in the church.
This suffering must not continue.
Your weeping has endured for a night.
The morning of your joy is here.
Scripture Insight – Proverbs 13:7
There is one who makes himself rich, yet has nothing.
And there is one who makes himself poor, yet has great riches.
That last statement describes our situation.
We are rich.
We have resources.
Unquantifiable resources.
But we have made ourselves poor.
Reason One: Not Knowing What We Have
People do not know what God has provided for them.
According to 2 Peter 1:3, His divine power has given us all things that pertain to life and godliness.
Spiritual resources.
Material resources.
Financial resources.
But multitudes do not know.
Reason Two: Lack of Faith in What We Have
People do not have faith, or enough faith, in what God has given them.
Philemon verse 6 says the communication of your faith becomes effectual by acknowledging every good thing that is in you in Christ Jesus.
Reason Three: Not Being God-Inside Conscious
Many are not conscious that God is living inside them.
That they are God’s mobile temple.
Because of this, they do not take advantage of His presence.
Personal Testimony of Divine Guidance

What saved me was this truth: Someone is living inside me.
He directed me.
He preserved me.
He saved my life.
Spiritual Warfare Illustration
The enemy plants landmines, but the Spirit inside you is a mine detector.
He knows.
He sees.
He warns.
But because people are not conscious of Him, they suffer.
The More Excellent Way
There is a more excellent way.
A master key.
A sure banker.
This Spirit inside us can show us that way, but many do not ask Him.
Wrong Prayer Focus
Many keep praying, Lord do this for me.
But sometimes the prayer should be, Lord what do You want me to do?
Reason Four: Despising God’s Ministers
The anointing you despise will not benefit you.
Luke 10:16 makes it clear.
To despise God’s servants is to despise God.
Reason Five: Not Asking for Big Things
Open your mouth wide and I will fill it. Psalm 81:10.
The problem is not big things.
The problem is managing big things.
Calling Light Out of Darkness
God called light out of darkness.
But many call darkness out of darkness.
Speak what you want to see.
Call healing.
Call deliverance.
Call restoration.
Living Testimony of Confession

Is there still balm in Gilead?
The answer is yes.
The power of God is still the same.
The Spirit of God has not retired.
